What Is The Best Vacuum For Pet Hair?

If you have a cat that’s constantly shedding you may be wondering what is the best vacuum for pet hair? I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s had vacuum cleaners give up and die! No matter how carefully you look after them, they soon get clogged up with cat or dog hair. In this post I’ll be reviewing some of the more powerful vacuum cleaners designed especially for picking up pet hair.

Cat hair that’s embedded in carpets and furniture not only looks unsightly, but can worsen allergies as well. Fur dander, and dust mites often cause nasal irritation if you’re sensitive to them. A blocked nose and continual sneezing may feel like you’ve got a constant cold, but could well be an allergic reaction instead.

You can remove stubborn pet hairs from furnishings by using a lint roller. This is often the best way if you don’t have a very powerful vacuum. It’s time consuming though, especially if you haven’t brushed your cat for a few days! A stiff brush also works well. Be careful with delicate fabrics though.

A good tip is to sprinkle the area with baking powder first. This not only deodorises, but helps loosen hairs as well. A rubber broom is also a highly effective tool in removing hair if you don’t have the funds for a pet vacuum. It may not be as effective as a high powered vacuum, but is still a good option.

Of course the best way of keeping your cat’s shedding to a minimum is regular brushing. Knowing how to groom your cat the right way not only reduces shedding, but helps bonding, and alerts you to any health issues as well.

What is the best vacuum for pet hair-what to look for

Before you decide on what pet vacuum to get, there are a few points to consider. Firstly, the type of flooring you have. A hardwood floor requires different brush heads to a carpeted floor. Most vacuums are multifunctional, but always check accessories. You can buy pet vacuums specifically for hardwood floors, but unless you have no rugs or furnishings to clean I’d see them as a waste of money.

Your budget, and what you can afford is top priority. Don’t mistake though of buying a cheap vacuum with poor suction and weak motor as it won’t last 5 minutes with a hairy pet!! In general, the higher the cost, the more features and accessories you get. You can also expect a more powerful cleaner, and one that lasts a long time.

The following pet vacuums are what I believe to be the best for you and your cat. Some are higher priced than others, and vary in size and capacity. Only spend what you can afford, and take into account the number of pets shedding fur!! I’ve given you the pros and cons of each, helping you make an informed choice.

  1. Pet hairs can be a nightmare to clean up, especially from carpets and sofas. Great to know that there are some heavy duty vacuums available to pick them up.

I’d love to try the robotic vacuum, although I’d probably have to introduce it to the dog and pray she doesn’t attack it!

    • Thank you Sharon:) Yes, without a decent vacuum, pet hairs can be a nightmare to get rid of. I’m sure many pets on seeing a robotic vacuum would see it as fair game lol! My cat chases anything that moves, so I could see him pouncing on the robot a few times:)

  2. Kathy, thank you for your detailed review of the range of vacuums for pet air.

Our Siamese cat loses hair all the time especially at this time of the year, but as she comes on our bed before she goes in her own bed leaves hairs all over the place. Glad I am not allergic.

Some really good products that you have covered that started off reasonably priced but then shot up to the robot over £400. I guess that product would be handy if you lived in a roundhouse right?

I see you can control it with a smartphone as well. Where are we going with technology?

Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed the post.

    • Thanks Mick:) My cat also comes on my bed, but unlike your Siamese, he stays there all night! Yes, I’m sure the robot vacuum would be ideal in a roundhouse lol! I agree, technology is advancing so fast, we’ll be controlling everything with our smartphones:)

  3. Pet fur and dander is a common problem for many vacuums to do a sufficient job, and I know from being a dog owner for many years. Many of the vacuums supposed to be especially for pet owners I have experienced does not live up to what they claim to do, and anyone with allergies needs a reliable machine to keep their home healthy and still be able to own pets.

    Great post

    • Thank you Jeff:) Yes, there are so many vacuum cleaners that just can’t cope with all the fur and dander off our dogs and cats. I suffer from a dust allergy and use a pet vacuum with washable filters. I always know when it’s time to vacuum by my sneezing lol! Glad you enjoyed my post:)

  6. I didn’t know that baking powder helps to loosen pet hair! I have a HUGE problem with pet hair, but more in my car than in my home and it’s quite difficult to find a good vacuum that actually gets all of the hair! I’m going to try the rubber broom tip too. Thank you!
