What Is A Pet Camera?

what is a pet camera

If you’re wondering what is a pet camera, you’ve come to the right place. In this article you’ll discover all you need to know about pet cameras and why they’re becoming so popular.

With many pet parents being at work all day, pet cameras are a great way to keep an eye on your pet as well as your home. You’ll discover some of the best pet cameras on the market today, as well as pros and cons of each. Plus, handy tips for ensuring your kitty is happy and healthy if you spend long hours away.

What is a pet camera?

A pet camera is simply a webcam you connect to your home Wi-Fi system allowing you to view your cat or dog at home. They’re a great way to see what your kitty gets up to all day while you’re at work! As we know, cats sleep a lot of the time, but you can see what she gets up to when she’s active! If you have canine kids as well, they can also get in on the act:)

You view live streaming on your smartphone making it easily accessible. Whether you’re in the office or out with friends all day you can see exactly what’s going on in your home.

What are the benefits of a pet camera?

The greatest benefit of a pet camera is knowing your pet is ok. Being able to see in real time what your cat or dog is up to can be great fun as well as highly addictive!

Some allow you to interact with your cat or dog, and even dispense treats. This is great news as some pets suffer anxiety separation. Hearing your voice can make a big difference to a lonely cat or dog.

Just imagine being to discover how that lamp ended up on the floor, or how kitty managed to open the cupboard door to look for her treats! Seriously though, it can provide great comfort to your pets. It’s not just pets you can keep an eye on, but any people in the house as well.

If you’ve arranged for a pet sitter to walk the dog or feed your cat, you’ll know exactly what’s going on. Leaving your fur family in the hands of someone you don’t know too well can be daunting. At least with a pet camera you’ll soon find out if she or he is sticking to their word.

Apart from those who should be in your home, you’ll know of any attempted break ins. Plus, should a burglar have entered your property you’ll have video coverage to show the police. Home security is essential, especially if you go on holiday.

The following pet cameras are those I recommend based on my own opinion and research. While there’s no guarantee your cat or dog will interact with a pet camera, it’s unlikely they won’t! We all know how curious our fur babies can be:)

Pawbo Life Wi-Fi Pet Camera Flash Combo Set

pawbo life pet camera

Pawbo life pet camera has HD video, enabling you to see your cat’s antics in crisp detail. It has a wide angle lens, and can rotate 130 degrees. This is excellent as you’re able to follow your pet and see everything. In addition, 4x zoom gives you the chance to capture some fantastic images.

Built in flash allows you to view at night time which is great for checking in your fur babies after dark. The Pawbo flash unit is situated on top of the unit in cute plastic ears. Light sensors activate Bright LED lights situated inside the ears. This not only gives light for your pets, but helps the camera see as well.

The camera is very easy to set up using a downloadable app. Though you don’t get detailed instructions in the box, everything is covered in the app, and should only take a few minutes. You will need a smartphone, either android or IOS, as well as a home Wi-Fi system.

One of the attractive features of Pawo Life pet camera is being able to share your pet’s images on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. This is a huge bonus as pet photos are very shareable on social media!

Another great feature is the treat dispenser. You’ll be able to reward your cat or dog anytime from the app. There’s a tray inside the camera you can fill with small kibbles. These are dispensed down a chute, and you can point it so the treats are aimed away from the counter top.

The laser pointer is great for getting your cat or dog moving, and you can control it from the app. Though it’s considered safe, some buyers questioned it. However, the beam never stays in one spot for more than 3 seconds, and is deactivated if there are no commands over a 3 second period.

One feature that’s quite reassuring for anxious pet parents is a 2 way audio system. This means you can hear if your kitty is meowing, or the dog is barking. You can then talk to them in a calming voice. However, you may want to shout at the dog if he’s on the sofa!! Some buyers though, found the phone to camera audio wasn’t very clear.

You can even set a fixed point, or use your fingers to swipe across the screen. This is great fun as the laser follows the direction of your fingers. A few buyers found the laser wouldn’t activate remotely, but worked by switching the button on the device itself.

One thing many of us pet parents worry about when we leave our fur babies at home is whether it’s too hot or too cold. Leaving the heating on all day can be expensive, but this smart device allows you to activate the heating or air conditioning.

There’s no point spending all your hard earned money only to find you never use the camera! Often, hi-tec gadgets are a novelty, and once that wears off, they sit there collecting dust.

If you really believe you’ll be using your pet camera regularly, then yes, it’s definitely worth it. Don’t get sucked in by numerous features you’ll never use though. Take your time and search around before making a final decision.

  1. Hi Kathy,

Firstly, thanks for such a wonderfully informative and interesting article.

One thing that immediately comes to mind – was there any particular reason that the Dogcool smart pet camera rated so low when compared to your other reviews?

I would hazard a guess that many people would be looking for “smart” capabilities nowadays, such as climate control, especially when you’re away from your babies.

    Thanks
    Partha

    1. Thank you Partha:) Glad you enjoyed my post, and yes, I think it depends on what features buyers are looking for. I love the idea of being able to control the temperature at home and I’m sure many other pet owners would feel the same when choosing a pet camera:)
