What Is A Furminator Brush? Plus, Proven Tips For A Tangle Free Cat!

If you’re a new cat parent wondering about grooming, you may be asking “what is a furminator brush?” Well, in this post I’ll be explaining all about the furminator brush and if it’s right for your feline.

Knowing how to groom your cat is essential. All breeds whether long or short hair need regular sessions to keep their coat healthy.

We’ll be looking at the different types of furmintor brush and tips on using them. Plus, how often you should groom your cat. and what causes shedding.

All breeds are different, and while some are four legged shedding machines, others shed significantly less. In addition, there are cats totally unsuited to a furminator brush, and we’ll be covering that as well.

So without further ado, lets find out about this unique pet grooming tool and what it does.

How Does The Furminator Work?

The Furminator is a deshedding tool that doesn’t damage your cat’s coat. It was actually invented by professional groomers who know all about the problems involved.

It simply works by removing dead undercoat while massaging. This means your cat has less dead hair to ingest and improved blood flow to the skin.

No hair is cut, so you’d have to remove mats and tangles first. You needn’t be afraid of hurting your cat providing you’re gentle.

The blade can be sharp, so avoid scraping the skin. Providing you only comb into the undercoat you should be fine. It’s designed to penetrate the top coat and remove loose hair without cutting your cat’s skin.

The Furminator isn’t actually a brush, but a rake with a fine comb shaped blade. In addition, a rejecter button drops the fur.

This makes it easy to clean as you work your way over the cats coat.

What Are The Benefits of using a Furminator?

The main benefit of using this tool is a reduction in hairballs. Removing loose hair from your cat’s coat saves it from being ingested.

Although hairballs are perfectly normal, they typically occur during the changing seasons. By removing dead hair you can reduce the chances of your kitty coughing up the odd hairball.

In addition to reducing the amount of hairballs, you’d also see less cat hair on your sofa and carpets. Embedded pet hair can be notoriously hard to remove.

Why Does My Cat Shed?

All cats molt in spring and autumn. This is a natural process in preparation for a new coat.

Just like you’d wear a light jacket in summer and heavy coat in winter, it’s the same for your cat. The only difference being your cat has to grow hers!

Molting, or shedding is simply getting rid of dead hair that’s not removed by grooming. The only breeds that don’t shed are hairless such as the sphynx.

In fact, if a cat stops shedding it’s often a sign of ill health. This could be a result of poor diet, allergies, or infection.

How Often Should You Groom Your Cat?

In general, long hair cats should be brushed daily, while short hair breeds will be fine with weekly sessions. cats such as Persians have very thick undercoats.

Unless you stick to a regular grooming schedule you can expect knots and tangles. Always comb out knots before using a furminator.

You can get tools such as pet detangling combs to make removing knots easier. NEVER pull out knots though!

You wouldn’t pull knots out of your hair, so don’t expect your cat to let you!

Breeds You Should Never Use A Furminator Brush On

Not all cat breeds are suitable for Furminator brushes. These include curly coated cats such as LaPerm and Cornish Rex.

Also, breeds without undercoats including Bombay, Havana Brown, Singaura, Turkish Van, and others not mentioned here.

In addition, don’t use a Furminator if your cat has sensitive skin. In this case it’s best to use a brush such as the Hertzko self cleaning slicker brush.

Final Thoughts

The good thing about the Furminator is it doesn’t actually cut hair, but removes loose hair from your cat’s undercoat. However, you must avoid using it on one spot for too long.

This is because it could scratch or irritate the skin. However, as long as you’re mindful of that you should be fine.
