Igloo Cat Beds

If you’ve heard about igloo cat beds and want to find out more, you’ve come to the right place. As a cat parent myself I wasn’t aware of them until a friend bought one for her cat.

It looked really cosy, and her cat was actually sitting in it! I don’t know about you, but cat beds I’ve bought in the past were only used for a short time. Once the novelty wore off my cats would always find other places to sleep.

In this post you’ll discover why your cat needs her own bed and why igloo cat beds are so popular with cats and their owners. Plus, we take a look at some of the best on the market.

Up until now my cat’s choice of bed varied from an empty cardboard box under the table to sleeping on the bed. However, as you can see in the photo above, he likes his new igloo cat bed!

After the bed arrived a few days ago, I unwrapped it and put the mat that came with it inside. I expected to have to coax my cat Alfie inside with a few treats and left it on the floor.

The most I expected was to see him inspect the bed, however, after about half an hour later I saw him happily sitting inside! A few days has passed and the novelty hasn’t worn off. He loves curling up inside the igloo, and I think enjoys the privacy. It must be like having his own little bedroom!

What are igloo cat beds?

Igloo cat beds provide a cosy and luxurious place for your cat to sleep. Unlike traditional flat beds, they’re enclosed with an opening at the front. Most look like igloos or caves and are available in a variety of designs.

As they have enclosed sides your cat is protected from draughts and can enjoy her own private space. Always check the size of an igloo or cave cat bed before buying. Most are spacious enough for an average size kitty, and will easily fit two young kittens.

In addition, you’ll find igloo beds are made from plush or other soft material. This gives a warm, cosy feel, providing comfort during cooler weather.

Why cats love igloo beds

blue igloo cat bed

Cats love feeling safe and secure, and though your kitty has no predators indoors it’s still instinctive for her to find small spaces to sleep. Narrow openings provide a bolt hole from the outside world giving privacy.

If your feline friend shares her home with other cats or dogs, it’s good to provide her with her own private space she can retreat to. In fact, a nice idea would be to get one bed for each cat. That way, every member of your furry family would have his or her own space to escape to.

Place a few toys inside the igloo and maybe a heated pad for added luxury. You can get small heat pads for cats and dogs that are especially good for arthritis. In addition, some igloo cat beds are made from self warming material. This means your cat’s body is used to retain heat inside the bed.

Igloo or cave beds are only meant for use indoors. They’re not designed to be used as outdoor cat houses. If you want your cat to have shelter outside, I recommend an outdoor cat house. You can get some really nice ones and some are even heated.

Where is the best place to put your cat’s igloo bed?

As igloo beds have enclosed sides you don’t have to worry too much about draughts, but it’s a good idea to place it somewhere where your cat won’t be disturbed. On the floor is fine, but somewhere elevated may give your cat an extra sense of security.

Cats love sitting on perches as they not only feel safer off ground level, but enjoy surveying the world around them. Some cat trees come with hidey holes that make excellent cave beds.

The following igloo cat bed reviews are based on my own opinion and customer ratings. I may make a small commission on any purchases made but this in no way affects the price you pay.

Tempcore Cat Bed for Indoor Cats, Machine Washable Cat Beds, Cat Beds for Indoor Cats or Small Dogs, Puppy, Kitty, Kitten, Rabbit, Anti-Slip & Water-Resistant Bottom

tempcore cat bed

Tempcore cat bed has a wide hooded entrance giving easy access. The igloo bed is advertised as giving enough room for cats up to 15lb which should be fine for most average felines. As the bed is is made from microfibre fabric it holds heat well.

It’s also machine washable making the igloo bed easy to keep clean. However, it’s recommended you use a cool wash cycle, and either air dry or use the lowest temperature setting in your tumble drier.

A thick cushion gives added comfort and is included with the bed.As it’s removable you can clean it separately. Use a soft brush or damp cloth to remove any loose debris or hair.

A really useful feature is the plastic mat underneath the base. It’s non-slip and can help stop the bed sliding on wooden or tiled flooring. In addition, you also get a small dangly toy to hang at the entrance.

One point to note is you’re advised to allow time for the bed to fluff up after taking it out of the packaging. In fact they also suggest machine washing and tumble drying it first. I personally wouldn’t unless there was any chemical smell.

A few buyers found the bed didn’t hold it’s shape, but if you give it a shake and plump out the sides it may help.

Petmaker cozy kitty igloo cat bed is made from plush fabric. This material is great for keeping your feline friend warm and cosy.

As previously mentioned, cats love small enclosed spaces as it makes them feel safe. The opening is wide enough for most cats up to 15lb, and the soft cushion provides added comfort.

As the bed is advertised as being hand wash only, don’t be tempted to use the delicates setting on your washing machine. It may take a bit more time and care to wash the bed, but it should retain it’s shape when dry.

As an added caution, the pillow is advertised as being filled with polystyrene foam which is a flammable material. Just be mindful where you place the bed.

A few buyers reported the bed as feeling thin and a bit flimsy. However, don’t let this put you off, as providing the sides are enclosed and you place a small cushion inside, most cats will enjoy the privacy.

Hollypet Self-Warming Comfortable Triangle Cat Bed Tent House, 13 × 13 × 14 inches

This particular Hollypet cat bed is smaller in size and would be fine for smaller cats or kittens. It’s made from polyester material and the mat is filled with polyester foam. As mentioned previously, this is flammable material so you need to be mindful where you place it.

I would definitely recommend hand washing this bed, and leaving it to air dry. This is because machine washing could easily damage the fabric and you may not be able to get it back in shape again.

Although the bed is advertised as being self warming, it’s not made from any special heat retaining fabric. I believe the only reason it’s considered self warming is the heat from your cat’s body will keep the small enclosed space warm.

Some buyers reported the size being too small for their cats. However, it does advertise the bed as being suitable for kittens and adult cats up to 12lb. This would be the perfect bed for young kittens.

Welaxy Felt pet House Bed Caves for Cat Cozy Cave

This fun, cat head shaped igloo cat bed has a zip enabling you to remove the top. This means you can use the base as a flat, open bed. This could be useful in very hot weather when an enclosed space may be too warm for your cat.

As the bed is grey in color it will fit in with most decor, and it’s lightweight design makes it very portable. You can easily move the bed from room to room, or out of the way while you’re doing housework.

Are igloo cat beds the right choice for your fur family?

Unless your cat is a super size breed such as a Ragdoll, igloo cat beds can provide a snug and cosy place to sleep. Their enclosed shape can make your cat feel safe and protected. This can have huge benefits on the quality of your cat’s sleep.

Our feline friends need twice as much sleep as we do, so providing the best possible environment ensures your cat enjoys plenty of rest. Lack of quality sleep is just as bad for your cat as it is for you.

If you wanted to really spoil your kitty you could always invest in a small size cat heating pad, and place inside the bed. This could be useful on very cold days when you’re at home but don’t want the heating on all the time.

If you live in a busy, noisy household, an igloo cat bed can provide the perfect bolt hole. Cats, just like people need time alone. Too much noise and chatter can be overwhelming to a sensitive feline.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at igloo cat beds and that it’s inspired you with ideas. Please share if you’ve found this article useful. Also, feel free to save this pin to your “pets” board:)

  1. All these igloos look so comfortable that I would like to buy one for my self as well 🙂 I mean, who wouldn’t want to take a nap in something like that! Anyway, as always, I enjoyed reading your post. And also, thanks a lot for sharing your top recommendations too. I know my cats will thank you as well! Have a great day and keep up the good work!

    • Thank you Ivant:) I know what you mean. I think I’d like to take a snooze in one of those cat caves as well! They certainly look comfy! Glad you enjoyed this post and thanks for stopping by:)

  2. Hi Kathy,

What a great article! You have so many cute igloo cat bed options listed!

Did your cat have a tree with a hidey-hole before you got him the igloo bed? I know you said he went right in without any coaxing, but I’m still not sure my cats would like these, just because they like to sprawl out on flat surfaces when they sleep (I think they’re very weird cats). They have a tree with a hidey-hole, but I’ve never been able to get them into it – they won’t even go into it to fetch their toys; they like the upper perches instead.

    • Thank you Jade:) No, Alfie hasn’t had a cat tree with hidey hole from me, but when he was in the rescue centre, he had his own little hidey hole. I remember when I first saw him 3 years ago, on the day I adopted him. He was running up a cat ladder into his hole. The volunteers working there said he loved sleeping in his hidey hole and I think he felt safe there. All cats are different and maybe yours just doesn’t like sitting in a small space. You could always try putting the hidey hole on an upper perch if it will fit:)

  3. These igloo cat beds really look fantastic. I like the versions of Welaxy Felt pet House Bed Caves for Cat Cozy Cave and All Fur You Unicorn Style Cat Cave Bed. Cats really like such dens because they feel safe, so boxes are popular with us and we set new ones all the time. I am excited about the idea of giving them such igloo cat beds as gifts for the holidays now.
    Friendly greeting,

    • Thank you Nina:) Yes, both Welaxy and the unicorn style cat beds look very cosy, and most cats love small enclosed spaces as it makes them feel safe. My cat loves empty boxes as well and squeezes himself inside. Adding a small blanket or cushion can give boxes a cosy feel. Glad you enjoyed this post:)

  4. Such cuties Kathy … those beds look good to eat. I’m telling you, these cats are having a whale of a time.
I loved the igloo beds and when I finally get myself a cat, she is definitely getting one of your igloos. At present we have two dogs and they are a handful.

    • Thanks Aparna:) Yes, igloo beds for cats are certainly cute, and I wouldn’t mind curling up inside one myself as they look so cosy! Definitely try one when you get a cat. There’s no guarantee it will get used, but from experience my cat loves sitting in his little igloo! Thanks for stopping by:)

    • Thank you Delyana:) Yes, wouldn’t it be be great if igloo beds for cats could be human size as well! Cat houses and cave beds or igloos are actually very similar. A cat house can be a bit bigger though. They’re all essentially designed to give your cat a private place to sleep and play. Thanks for stopping by and glad you enjoyed this post:)

  5. It will be so awesome if my brother’s cat would take to the igloo bed, as what I dislike a lot is that the cat chooses to sleep on the bed I am supposed to sleep on and there are always cat hair everywhere on the bed which is not great at all. I will certainly consider this as a Christmas gift for my brother, also to my benefit so I can sleep on a bed without cat hair everywhere lol.

    • Hi Schalk, one thing about cats is they decide where they’re going to sleep whether that’s your bed or some other spot in the house. My cat loved his igloo bed for about a week and now decides sharing my bed is a better option lol! He still goes inside it sometimes during the day though. Yes, an igloo cat bed would make a great gift for your brother’s cat! Then, maybe, you’ll get your bed back!!

  6. I’ve seen these igloo cats on the internet lately and I was wondering about making one for my sister as she has a few cats at her place and it could be a great birthday gift for her, she might have fun looking at her cats using an igloo cat house.

    • Thank you for comment Alex, yes, that sounds like a wonderful idea! I’m sure your sister would love a handmade igloo cat bed:) Thanks for stopping by:)
