If you’ve heard about igloo cat beds and want to find out more, you’ve come to the right place. As a cat parent myself I wasn’t aware of them until a friend bought one for her cat.
It looked really cosy, and her cat was actually sitting in it! I don’t know about you, but cat beds I’ve bought in the past were only used for a short time. Once the novelty wore off my cats would always find other places to sleep.
In this post you’ll discover why your cat needs her own bed and why igloo cat beds are so popular with cats and their owners. Plus, we take a look at some of the best on the market.
Up until now my cat’s choice of bed varied from an empty cardboard box under the table to sleeping on the bed. However, as you can see in the photo above, he likes his new igloo cat bed!
After the bed arrived a few days ago, I unwrapped it and put the mat that came with it inside. I expected to have to coax my cat Alfie inside with a few treats and left it on the floor.
The most I expected was to see him inspect the bed, however, after about half an hour later I saw him happily sitting inside! A few days has passed and the novelty hasn’t worn off. He loves curling up inside the igloo, and I think enjoys the privacy. It must be like having his own little bedroom!
What are igloo cat beds?
Igloo cat beds provide a cosy and luxurious place for your cat to sleep. Unlike traditional flat beds, they’re enclosed with an opening at the front. Most look like igloos or caves and are available in a variety of designs.
As they have enclosed sides your cat is protected from draughts and can enjoy her own private space. Always check the size of an igloo or cave cat bed before buying. Most are spacious enough for an average size kitty, and will easily fit two young kittens.
In addition, you’ll find igloo beds are made from plush or other soft material. This gives a warm, cosy feel, providing comfort during cooler weather.
Why cats love igloo beds
Cats love feeling safe and secure, and though your kitty has no predators indoors it’s still instinctive for her to find small spaces to sleep. Narrow openings provide a bolt hole from the outside world giving privacy.
If your feline friend shares her home with other cats or dogs, it’s good to provide her with her own private space she can retreat to. In fact, a nice idea would be to get one bed for each cat. That way, every member of your furry family would have his or her own space to escape to.
Place a few toys inside the igloo and maybe a heated pad for added luxury. You can get small heat pads for cats and dogs that are especially good for arthritis. In addition, some igloo cat beds are made from self warming material. This means your cat’s body is used to retain heat inside the bed.
Igloo or cave beds are only meant for use indoors. They’re not designed to be used as outdoor cat houses. If you want your cat to have shelter outside, I recommend an outdoor cat house. You can get some really nice ones and some are even heated.
Where is the best place to put your cat’s igloo bed?
As igloo beds have enclosed sides you don’t have to worry too much about draughts, but it’s a good idea to place it somewhere where your cat won’t be disturbed. On the floor is fine, but somewhere elevated may give your cat an extra sense of security.
Cats love sitting on perches as they not only feel safer off ground level, but enjoy surveying the world around them. Some cat trees come with hidey holes that make excellent cave beds.
The following igloo cat bed reviews are based on my own opinion and customer ratings. I may make a small commission on any purchases made but this in no way affects the price you pay.
Tempcore Cat Bed for Indoor Cats, Machine Washable Cat Beds, Cat Beds for Indoor Cats or Small Dogs, Puppy, Kitty, Kitten, Rabbit, Anti-Slip & Water-Resistant Bottom
Tempcore cat bed has a wide hooded entrance giving easy access. The igloo bed is advertised as giving enough room for cats up to 15lb which should be fine for most average felines. As the bed is is made from microfibre fabric it holds heat well.
It’s also machine washable making the igloo bed easy to keep clean. However, it’s recommended you use a cool wash cycle, and either air dry or use the lowest temperature setting in your tumble drier.
A thick cushion gives added comfort and is included with the bed.As it’s removable you can clean it separately. Use a soft brush or damp cloth to remove any loose debris or hair.
A really useful feature is the plastic mat underneath the base. It’s non-slip and can help stop the bed sliding on wooden or tiled flooring. In addition, you also get a small dangly toy to hang at the entrance.
One point to note is you’re advised to allow time for the bed to fluff up after taking it out of the packaging. In fact they also suggest machine washing and tumble drying it first. I personally wouldn’t unless there was any chemical smell.
A few buyers found the bed didn’t hold it’s shape, but if you give it a shake and plump out the sides it may help.

PETMAKER Cozy Kitty
Petmaker cozy kitty igloo cat bed is made from plush fabric. This material is great for keeping your feline friend warm and cosy.
As previously mentioned, cats love small enclosed spaces as it makes them feel safe. The opening is wide enough for most cats up to 15lb, and the soft cushion provides added comfort.
As the bed is advertised as being hand wash only, don’t be tempted to use the delicates setting on your washing machine. It may take a bit more time and care to wash the bed, but it should retain it’s shape when dry.
As an added caution, the pillow is advertised as being filled with polystyrene foam which is a flammable material. Just be mindful where you place the bed.
A few buyers reported the bed as feeling thin and a bit flimsy. However, don’t let this put you off, as providing the sides are enclosed and you place a small cushion inside, most cats will enjoy the privacy.

Hollypet Self-Warming Comfortable Triangle Cat Bed Tent House, 13 × 13 × 14 inches
This particular Hollypet cat bed is smaller in size and would be fine for smaller cats or kittens. It’s made from polyester material and the mat is filled with polyester foam. As mentioned previously, this is flammable material so you need to be mindful where you place it.
I would definitely recommend hand washing this bed, and leaving it to air dry. This is because machine washing could easily damage the fabric and you may not be able to get it back in shape again.
Although the bed is advertised as being self warming, it’s not made from any special heat retaining fabric. I believe the only reason it’s considered self warming is the heat from your cat’s body will keep the small enclosed space warm.
Some buyers reported the size being too small for their cats. However, it does advertise the bed as being suitable for kittens and adult cats up to 12lb. This would be the perfect bed for young kittens.

This fun, cat head shaped igloo cat bed has a zip enabling you to remove the top. This means you can use the base as a flat, open bed. This could be useful in very hot weather when an enclosed space may be too warm for your cat.
Welaxy Felt pet House Bed Cave is made from soft but durable felt material. This means it’s able to withstand scratches from your kittie’s sharp claws. You get a small cushion with the bed which fits snuggly inside.
As the bed is grey in color it will fit in with most decor, and it’s lightweight design makes it very portable. You can easily move the bed from room to room, or out of the way while you’re doing housework.
You’ll find the cat bed arrives in two pieces, but they’re very easy to zip together. As the size is fairly generous it should be big enough for a larger cat.

You can gently handwash this cat bed using a mild detergent, and the cushion can be cleaned as well. As it’s a generous size there should be ample room for fat or larger breed kitties to curl up inside.

Are igloo cat beds the right choice for your fur family?
Unless your cat is a super size breed such as a Ragdoll, igloo cat beds can provide a snug and cosy place to sleep. Their enclosed shape can make your cat feel safe and protected. This can have huge benefits on the quality of your cat’s sleep.
Our feline friends need twice as much sleep as we do, so providing the best possible environment ensures your cat enjoys plenty of rest. Lack of quality sleep is just as bad for your cat as it is for you.
If you wanted to really spoil your kitty you could always invest in a small size cat heating pad, and place inside the bed. This could be useful on very cold days when you’re at home but don’t want the heating on all the time.
If you live in a busy, noisy household, an igloo cat bed can provide the perfect bolt hole. Cats, just like people need time alone. Too much noise and chatter can be overwhelming to a sensitive feline.
