Why Obesity In Cats Is Dangerous

Just as it is in people, obesity in cats is dangerous to health. In fact, if your cat is very overweight she’s at risk of the exact same health problems.

These include heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver disease, skin problems, and more. So you see, keeping your feline friend in good shape is vitally important.

Feeding your cat extra treats may seem kind, but over time these can lead to weight gain. Even just a few pounds overweight could potentially cause health problems.

NEVER give your cat unlimited access to dry food! This applies especially to indoor kitties.

Bored cats not only make mischief, but love eating extra treats! Just as you may reach for tasty snacks when you feel bored, your cat is no different.

Monitoring your cat’s weight at annual check ups can help prevent problems before they arise. All vets weigh their patients and can advise on feeding.

Tips To Help Your Cat Lose Weight

tips to help your cat lose weight

By following a few simple tips you can help your cat lose those extra ounces. These include playing with your cat each day.

Even as little as ten minutes twice a day will get her active. Also, consider investing in a few puzzle toys for your kitty

These are designed to make your cat work for her food which is what she’d be doing in the wild. Another good way to get your feline exercising is by providing her with a cat tree. These come in all shapes and sizes as well as varying prices.

What To Look For When Buying Weight Management Cat Food

Firstly, if your cat is overweight you should speak to your vet. He or she will gladly offer advice on the best course of action.

Look for foods containing higher levels of protein and lower carbs. Also, foods with a higher fiber content as these will keep your cat feeling full for longer.

The addition of probiotics is good for gut health, and many weight management cat foods include them. Also, those with natural ingredients and real meat are usually of a higher quality.

Final Thoughts

Cats are just as prone to weight gain as their owners with indoor or senior felines more at risk. Unless you take steps to help your cat lose weight she may be at greater risk of developing health problems.

By encouraging exercise and changing her diet to one that’s higher in fiber you’ll be taking positive steps. If you’re not sure how much to feed your cat, ask a vet.

Always introduce new food gradually though. This gives your kitty time to adjust.

Transforming a tubby kitty into a lean, mean hunting machine takes patience! Whether you have an obese feline or one that’s slightly overweight.

All cats are different though, with some breeds more inclined towards weight gain. In addition, arthritic seniors may gain extra ounces as a result of painful joints.

  1. I really like the natural ingredients in the products you have listed. It seems that they would be good products for a cat whether or not they have weight problems. Great list. I will be looking in to these further!

    • Hi Brianna, glad you enjoyed this post and yes, natural ingredients in cat food is always best. So many cheaper brands are bulked out with fillers which aren’t always good for managing your cat’s weight. Thanks for stopping by:)

  2. Hi Kathy,
Thank you for this informative post. I always look for alternative foods to help my cats keep the weight down. They are picky eaters and would eat anything but dry cat food. I think I have tried every canned food out there! You would think they would welcome the change. Nope, so I have stuck with the IAMS cat food and changed the flavors around a bit. But, I stick with the indoor weight and hairball formula. That’s the brand they were raised from as kittens and they don’t seem to want anything else!

    • Hi Chas, glad you found this post informative:) Yes, not all cats like dry food and can be picky. Fortunately, my cat is very easy going and will eat just about anything! IAMS is a good brand and a lot better than many others out there. Changing flavours is a good idea as it gives your cat variety. The indoor weight and hairball formula is a good choice. Thanks for stopping by)

  3. Hi Kathy,

Thanks for sharing your recommendations if cats need to control their weight. Just like human beings, overweight cats will have health problems. And if the owners don’t take some measures, things will only worsen.

I love Solid Gold Fit for many reasons, such as the package design, grain & gluten-free, low calories, and it’s perfect for older cats. I will choose this one and send it to my sister. She needs help with this. 🙂

    • Hi Matt, yes, both people and cats are prone to weight gain unless preventative steps are taken. Healthy diet and exercise are the best ways to control weight and lose any excess pounds. Many health problems can be prevented this way and possibly save hundreds on vet bills!

  4. Hey Kathy,
Thank you for this very detailed review on the best ways to manage the weight of our precious feline friends.

Beyond just the food recommendations, I also find your tips on cat trees and puzzle toys for exercise very helpful.

This article shows how important it is for us to be more attentive to our pets and their health. It’s more than just taking them to the vet and feeding them treats because we love them so much, we should also find time for exercise, do research on topics like these and learn more on the best way to care for our furry friends.

    This was an informative read.

    • Hi Femi, glad you enjoyed this post about weight management cat food:) Yes, keeping cats amused with puzzle toys certainly helps burn off extra calories! It also makes feeding more natural as stalking and pouncing are all part of a wildcat’s attempt to hunt and kill for food. Spending time with your cat is essential for bonding and also keeping her active. Thanks for your input:)
