In this post you’ll discover some of the best puzzle toys for cats to keep your kitty active. Bored cats soon find mischief and providing your feline friend with puzzle games is a great way to stop boredom!
Just like us, cats need mental stimulation, especially if they spend a lot of time indoors. Imagine if you sat at home all day with no TV, no internet and no one to interact with. I’m sure you’d quickly get bored and very frustrated.
Well, your cat is no different. If you’re out at work during the day and you keep your cat inside it’s vital you provide her with a few toys. They don’t have to be expensive, in fact you could even make your own puzzle toys.
Failing to do this could soon lead to a frustrated kitty. It won’t be a pretty sight if you come home to find your best cushion shredded, or breakables on the floor!
Even if you have two cats to keep each other company they still need toys to keep them occupied. Bored cats soon take it out on each other. Cat fights can do a lot of damage in the home as well as cause discord in their relationship.
Providing your cat with environmental enrichment
Whether you have one cat or several, providing environmental enrichment helps satisfy their basic needs. This includes satisfying the need to hunt. Giving your cat puzzle toys helps address this issue. Of course, other needs include fresh clean drinking water, food, and a cosy place to sleep.
Even though your kitty gets all her meals provided by you, she still needs to hone her hunting skills. Suppressing this basic instinct isn’t good for your cat’s wellbeing. As mentioned previously, you don’t need to spend a lot of money.
Cats are highly intelligent animals and good at problem solving. Though just like us, some are brighter than others! In many ways it’s a good job our feline friends don’t have opposable thumbs!
Just imagine your clever kitty working out how to get the lid off the treats jar, or craftily opening a can of tuna when you’re not looking!
Making your own food puzzle games
It’s easy to make food puzzle games with items you have in your home. Simple games can include things like scooping treats out of empty egg carton holes, or shaking cardboard tubes to release food.
Your imagination is the limit, though if you’d rather buy ready made games you may like the following:) Any of these toys would make a nice Christmas present for your cat, or friends who have a feline family:)
The reviews are based on research and my own opinions. I will get a small commission if you buy through my links, but this in no way reflects the price you pay.
Trixie Activity-Mad Scientist For Cats
This puzzle feeder toy will challenge your kitty’s IQ! It’s designed to engage and make your cat work for her treats! The puzzle is comprised of 3 coloured tubes and lids which hang on a frame. The lids each have holes with varying patterns through which food drops out.
A peg board that sits under the frame adds to the difficulty. This is great for developing your cat’s intelligence and relieving boredom. Cats are very smart and easily capable of solving simple problems.
In order to get the treats your cat has to spin the tubes so they drop out through the holes. Then, she has to drag them off the peg board. It may take your kitty a little while to master the puzzle, but you can help and encourage by showing her.
A simple tip is to place a treat on top of a tube so she sees it. Then spin the tube. Once she gets the idea she won’t forget! It’s also a good way to encourage slow feeding. Your cat won’t be gobbling up the treats all in one go, but gradually as she drops them through the holes.
Suitable for all ages
This puzzle is suitable for cats of all ages and comes with a booklet full of useful training tips. A few buyers found their cat’s gave up on the puzzle and couldn’t work out where the treats came from. They suggested clear tubes so the cats could see them.
Just like people, some are smarter than others and quicker to grasp things. However, also like people, most will eventually learn new things with persistence! Be patient with your cat and find ways of associating treats with the phials.
Each tube holds 1/3 cup of small kibble, and the puzzle toy comes with a one year warranty.

Cat Amazing Sliders – Interactive Treat Puzzle Cat Toy – Active Food Puzzle Feeder
This puzzle feeder toy is great for food motivated cats. It satisfy’s hunting instincts as well as challenges your cat’s intellect. You get everything as a flat pack which is easy to assemble. There are 3 smaller boxes which fit inside a larger one. The boxes are colored yellow, green, and purple, and can hold small toys as well as treats.
Holes in the sides of the box allow your cat to push and slide around the smaller boxes inside. It stimulates natural curiosity and gets your feline friend working for her food treats or toys.
Another good thing about Amazing sliders is it gets your kitty physically active. All that pushing and sliding the box around the floor gives your cat a good workout!
The boxes are made from strong double layered cardboard making it tear and scratch resistant. In addition, the outer box has a plant based coating for extra durability.
This means the toy should last a long while even if you have several curious kitties trying to get their paws on the treats! My advice is to supervise your cat to start with until she gets the hang of using it.
Then, you could fill the boxes with treats while you’re out during the day to keep your cat out of mischief! Some buyers suggest putting small crinkly balls inside the box that are easy for feline paws to grab. A mix of toys and treats is a good idea to keep your cat mentally stimulated and encourage her natural instinct to explore.

Cat Amazing – Best Cat Toy Ever! Interactive Treat Maze & Puzzle Feeder for Cats
Another puzzle toy for cats by Cat Amazing that features 4 levels of difficulty to keep your feline companion mentally stimulated. As with the previous puzzle game it comes in an easy to assemble flat pack with instructions.
This is a maze puzzle game that encourages your cat to explore, sniff, hunt, and retrieve hidden rewards. The box is made from reinforced cardboard making it resistant to sharp claws. The colors used in creating the inner chambers are those felines find easier to see. This makes it more fun and engaging for your cat.
You can place toys or food treats inside the trays and adjust the level of difficulty. Beginner level gives the maximum opening size. Then, once your cat has mastered this you can move on to intermediate level. It may take a while for your cat to work out how to retrieve a treat or toy, but felines are creative and masters at solving problems.
If you’ve ever watched a cat work out how to jump down from a height you’ll understand! You can almost see them thinking! Anyway, not to digress, this type of toy is perfect for developing your cat’s intelligence, and providing enrichment.
You may rightly argue that this is just a box with holes, but thought and care went into designing it. Yes, you could simply cut a few holes in a box, but this one is made to last and is 100% recyclable. It’s also been approved by veterinarians.

Doc & Phoebe’s Indoor Hunting Cat Feeder
The idea behind this cat puzzle feeder is to replace your cat’s feeding bowl with these cleverly designed mice. Each toy mouse has a mini container with two holes in which you place kibbles. Your cat has to work out how to retrieve the kibbles, making her work for them. Veterinarians say that cats naturally play with prey before eating it.
The mice skins are made to simulate the texture of a real mouse. This allows your kitty to catch her prey in the same way she would in the wild. Biting and clawing the mice she’ll release the kibbles making meal times far more natural.
It’s suggested you hide the mice each day so your cat has to hunt for them. This is what she’d do in the wild, and will help make her physically as well as mentally active.
The only downside is the mice aren’t designed to hold wet food. You’ll still need to feed your cat packet food in the same way, but maybe alternate meals with wet and dry food.
You get 3 feeders with 2 dispensing holes each. These allow any size kibble so you won’t need to buy special size ones. In addition you get a scoop which holds 1/6th of an adult cat’s daily ration. As well as the feeders you get a trainer with multiple holes. This allows you to get your cat used to using the feeders.
The parts are made from BPA free plastic making it safer for your cat, and in addition, they’re dishwasher safe. Plus, the fabric skin is a mix of nylon and rayon and can be machine washed.

Catit Senses 2.0 Digger Interactive Cat Toy
The digger interactive cat toy is designed to make your cat dig for her treats. It’s comprised of a food bowl with holes, 3 short narrow tubes and 2 long wide tubes enabling you to vary the level of difficulty. This is great for stimulating your cat’s instinct to hunt for food.
You simply fill the plastic tubes with kibbles and push into the holes. Digging with paws to retrieve kibbles makes the experience fun and mentally stimulating for your cat.
The sloped shape of the bowl catches stray kibbles, preventing spillage onto the floor. In addition, you get a mat to put the bowl on and prevent sliding. All parts are made from BPA free plastic, making it safe for your kitty. Also, it’s very easy to take apart and wash. It’s suggested you hand wash the bowl using a mild non abrasive liquid and rinse thoroughly.
If your has been used to eating from a regular food bowl it may take her a while to adjust to the puzzle feeder. Be very patient and my advice would be to break her into using it gradually.
Make the experience fun and rewarding and she’ll soon master the art of retrieving her favorite kibbles! The good thing about this puzzle feeder is it makes your cat eat at a slower pace. It’s common for cats to eat quickly which is bad for digestion. Eating slowly also reduces obesity as it does in humans.
A few buyers noted that if you have multiple cats ensure they all get a turn at digging the treats. Quieter kitties may not get a look in!

I hope this article has helped you understand the benefit of puzzle feeders. Cats tend to be greedy and eat fast, so getting them to slow down has huge benefits. You’ll not only prevent obesity, but encourage exercise as well. In addition, you’ll be challenging your cat’s intellect and keep her mind active.
Bored cats get frustrated often taking it out on furniture or even their owners. If your kitty spends a lot of time indoors it’s essential you stimulate her hunting instincts. Puzzle toys are a great way to do this and will keep her busy!
I’ve reviewed some of the best puzzle toys for cats I could find, and hope this has inspired you. Any one of these would make a great Christmas present for your kitty, or even friends who have feline families:)
