The Best Cat Grass Kits Reviews

Here’s a detailed look at some of my favourite cat grass kits. Whether you have an indoor cat or one that likes the outdoor life, she’ll enjoy a pot of tasty greens!

1 The Cat Ladies Cat Grass Kit & Decorative Wood Planter

The cat ladies grass kit comes with an attractive wooden planter. This would look great with any decor and make a charming feature in your home.

The kit contains 1 bag of organic seeds, and 1 organic soil disc. This is perfect as you have everything you need to get started.

You’ll be pleased to know this kit is non-GMO making it very safe for your cat. Encouraging your kitty to eat specially grown grass not only benefits her health, but saves your house plants!

The blend of grasses is packed with essential vitamins and provides up to 30% of your feline friend’s daily protein requirement. Not only does this provide roughage but helps reduce hairballs.

Cat Ladies claim their seeds sprout within 4-7 days. You must follow the instructions though for best results.

This includes placing the planter in a sunny position and avoiding overwatering. One thing to bear in mind is don’t be fooled by the tiny soil disc

Apparently, once you add water to the soil it expands up to 20 times it’s volume. As you can imagine, this provides plenty of nourishment for the grass.

Once the grass has been eaten or simply died you can buy refill kits. Each one contains 3 soil discs and 3 packets of seeds. This should be enough to keep your cat happy for quite some time!

Key Features

  • 100% organic, non-GMO
  • Highly nutritious blend of grasses
  • Rich in fibre
  • Helps keep your houseplants safe!
  • Attractive rustic wood planter
  • Makes a great gift for cat parents.

2 Cat-About Multi-Cat Cat Grass Plus Tub 150 grams by MiracleCorp/Gimborn

cat about multi cat grass

Cat-About grass seeds contain an additive for fast growth. This not only cuts down waiting time, but watering as well! Cat-About claim you only need to water the seeds once, making them very easy to care for.

The ingredient which holds water is a non-toxic agent called Plantagel. This makes it very safe for your cat while eliminating the need for frequent watering.

In fact it’s suggested you wait at least a week before adding any more water. This allows the seeds to germinate and sprout into lush, thick grass.

Cat about claim there’s a 98% germination rate with their seeds. This is reassuring as not all seed packets have such high rates.

Each Cat Grass plus tub contains a mix of wheat and oat seeds as well as peat moss and aged pine bark. This is purely organic and very cat friendly.

All you have to do is simply remove the lid and water once with the suggested amount. It may seem like you’re saturating the soil, but after a few days you should start seeing sprouts.

Key Features

  • 100% organic
  • 98% germination rate
  • Oat and wheat seeds
  • Peat moss and pine bark
  • Only need to water seeds once
  • Very easy and quick to grow
  • Healthy and nutritious for your cat

3 SmartyKat Sweet Greens Cat Grass Seed Kit

SmartyKat sweet greens cat grass seed kit is 100% organic. It comes with everything you need to grow tasty greens, including organic soil and small pot.

You get 1 oz of seeds inside the kit which should be plenty to produce a luscious crop of sprouts. A few things to bear in mind though which shouldn’t be a problem.

Firstly, you may want to plant the seeds in a larger pot for maximum results as the container provided is quite small. You could always buy a nice decorative one or just use any medium size bowl.

Secondly, although you get organic soil with the kit, it’s a good idea to use additional potting soil This ensures you get the best results.

Oat grass is very nutritional for cats, providing essential vitamins and other nutrients. However, please don’t be tempted to try it for yourself as it’s not suitable for human consumption!

The seeds should sprout within a few days, but make sure the greens are a few inches tall before letting your cat nibble them. Also, don’t let her eat the seeds.

A good idea is to place the pot near your cat’s food dish when the sprouts are ready. This should encourage her to nibble them while eating her dinner.

Key Features

  • 100% organic
  • Fast growing seeds
  • Soil included
  • Small pot included
  • Helps protect your houseplants!

4 The Cat Ladies Organic Pet Grass Grow Kit with Planter

The Cat Ladies grass grow kit comes with a cute cat head design planter. This makes an attractive feature in your kitchen or living room.

A combination of fiber and essential nutrients helps improve your cat’s digestive health. This in turn reduces the amount of hairballs your feline friend coughs up.

As the seeds are non-GMO they’re very safe for your cat. This is reassuring and great to know.

The kit also comes with organic soil and full instructions. If followed correctly your seeds should germinate within days.

Once you begin to see sprouts appearing move the container to a sunny spot. This could be on a windowsill or other suitable place.

5 Van Ness Oat Garden Kit

Van Ness Oat Garden Kit is 100% organic and provides everything you need to grow fresh greens for your cat. Includes one 4 oz pack of oat seeds and natural peat moss.

You simply sprinkle a handful of seeds on top of soil and use your fingers to space evenly apart. Lightly cover, and gently pour over water. After replacing lid and storing in a dark place, Van Ness claim you should start seeing shoots in a few days.

One thing to note is some buyers found peat moss provided doesn’t absorb water very well. I’d suggest getting a small bag of potting compost and using that instead.

Also, be mindful of the amount of seeds you sprinkle onto the soil. As you get quite a large packet you could make it last. In fact, you could get several containers and start germinating seeds while you have one ready to use!

This means your kitty will always have a nice supply of greens! In addition, don’t forget, these greens are suitable for dogs and other pets as well.

It’s important to keep the container in a sunny place once the shoots appear. This helps encourage healthy growth, and provide your kitty with tasty greens.

The good thing about oat grass is it freshens breath, as well as provides essential nutrients. Once your kitty starts munching you may notice a sweeter smelling breath!

Key Features

  • 100% organic
  • One 4 oz pack of oat seeds
  • Natural moss peat
  • Full instructions
  • Promotes healthy digestion
  • Saves your house plants!

What to look for when buying cat grass

black cat eating cat grass

Firstly, there is no specific grass that’s only meant for cats. Your cat doesn’t know the difference or cares what she’s munching! However, there are a variety of greens which have a higher nutritional value.

One of the best is oat grass. Although you can’t ask your cat’s opinion, many believe it’s the most flavorsome.

In addition it helps freshen breath and is a good source of protein.

Why cats eat grass

Your cat eats grass as it contains nutrients beneficial to her digestive system. If you’ve seen your feline friend munching grass after throwing up, it’s instinctive.

Think of cat grass as being greens. As humans we’re omnivores, so vegetables play an important part in our diet. If you were to stop eating meat you’d still survive. In fact, many like myself choose to follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Cats on the other hand are obligate carnivores. This means they can’t survive without meat. However, cats are also able to digest plant material.

This includes grass of which most will be the type found on your lawn! Providing you don’t use weed killer or pesticides, your cat is safe to eat it.

What is the difference between lawn grass and cat grass?

Whereas regular lawn grass may be sprayed with chemicals, cat grass is purely organic. Although you can’t stop your kitty munching on next doors lawn, you can provide her with a safer, and healthier alternative.

You either have the option of buying pre-potted grass, cat grass kits, or individual packets of seeds. You could decide to mix a variety of seeds in one container, or provide individual containers each with it’s own grass type.

Final Thoughts

Now you know a bit more about why cats eat grass and different types I hope I’ve inspired you. As you’ve learned there’s a variety of seeds available, and all are extremely easy to grow.

The kits I’ve shared with you contain some of the best grass for cats and all are 100% organic. In addition, soil is included, though with some including the Van Ness Oat Garden kit you may want to use potting compost.

In my opinion the The Cat Ladies Grass Kit & Decorative Wooden Planter
is the best as not only do you get a blend of different grass seeds but an attractive container as well.

Don’t worry about your kitty overdosing on cat grass! As long as you use organic seeds your cat will be fine.

It’s far safer than lawn grass, especially if it’s been sprayed with chemicals. Also, your house plants will breathe a sigh of relief!

Have you tried growing cat grass? I’d love you to share your thoughts.

Wishing you a purrfect day:)

Kathy

  1. We like that these are non-Gmo, and they are safe for house cats, and the way they eat the house plants makes it more efficient for them to have something of their own. Cats are real possessive, and if they had a plant of their own, it would be wise.
We will get this as a gift to our family; she says her cat eats her plants all the time, and I want to get this for her as a surprise.

    Cheers,

  2. Something that we haven’t considered for our cat is grass and after reading your post shall be looking into it.

Our cat has long hair and suffers from time to time with hairballs.

Even though we groom her all the time and have tried adding stuff to her food nothing seems to work.

I like the fact that these grasses are non-chemical and have to be better for our cat’s health.

    Thank you for sharing

    • Hi Mick, yes, long hair cats are especially prone to hairballs. I know from experience!! The only supplement I can recommend adding to your cat’s food is salmon fish oil. I hope you decide to try growing some cat grass as it may well help. Thanks for stopping by, and glad this post was useful:)

  4. Hey Kathy,

These are such great kits! I always learn so much from your site about cats and “all to do with cats”! Hehe, see what I did there? 😛

Anyways, I have a lot of houseplants and some are not safe for pets, especially cats. When my friends or relatives used to come over, I would have to place the houseplants dangerous for their pets in a room and lock that room! It wasn’t often that they brought their cats but they did so since they know my love for cats!

So now, I can grow cat grass and even suggest it to all my friends who have the same struggle as me! What a great idea and one I did not even know existed!

My personal favorite is the Organic Cat Grass Grow Kit with Planter by Cat Ladies, especially because the planter is too cute! Would you happen to know if the planter has drainage holes?

Thanks for an awesome post once again!
