The Best Flea And Tick Treatment For Cats Reviews

Here’s a detailed look at some of the best flea and tick treatments for cats. Whether you want to kill fleas already on your cat, or prevent an infestation I hope you find a suitable product.

Frontline Plus Flea & Tick Spot Treatment for Cats

best flea and tick treatment for cats-frontline plus

From my own personal experience I’ve always found Frontline one of the most effective flea treatments. Having used it on all cats I’ve owned over the years it’s worked well.

The only downside though is it’s not made from natural ingredients. However, that being said, Frontline is a trusted brand recommend by most veterinarians.

Spot on is applied with easy to use pipettes, but I suggest opening them while your cats are not watching! This is especially important if you’re on your own with no one to hold your cat!

Frontline is absorbed into your cat’s skin killing any fleas or ticks that come in contact with it. You can expect adult fleas to die within 24 hours, and ticks within 48 hours.

The two main ingredients in Frontline Plus are fipronil and methoprene. While fipronil kills adult insects, methoprene destroys eggs and larvae.

This powerful combination works to ensure your cat remains free from these unpleasant pests. If your cat has a really bad infestation though it may take several applications before she’s completely pest free.

You’ll be pleased to hear there are 3 different size options. This means you can choose between a 3 month, 6 month, or 8 month supply and save money.

Frontline Plus is suitable for kittens over 8 weeks old, as well as pregnant and nursing cats. However, get advice from your vet first if you’re unsure or worried.

Key Features
  • Vet approved
  • Kills fleas ticks, eggs and larvae
  • Fast acting kills fleas within 24 hours
  • Waterproof protection
  • Active ingredients fipronil and methoprene
  • Easy to administer
  • 3 monthly spot on applications
  • Suitable for cats over 1.5 pounds

Advantage II Flea Spot Treatment for Cats 5-9 lbs & Ferrets

best flea and tick treatment for cats-advantage

Advantage II Flea Spot Treatment is suitable for cats between 5-9 pounds. In addition, it can also be used on kittens over 8 weeks old, and ferrets.

As Advantage is a spot on treatment it’s easy to use. You simply apply the liquid onto the back of the neck.

Advantage claim their product starts working within 12 hours. In the same way as Frontline it works by killing fleas on contact with the skin.

This means your cat doesn’t have to suffer bites from pesky fleas in order for them to die. This can save a lot of discomfort and scratching.

The active ingredients in Advantage are imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen. Both are highly effective at killing pest.

While imidacloprid is an insecticide killing adult fleas, pyriproxyfen is a growth inhibitor, killing eggs and larvae.

Advantage 11 is fragrance free so your cat won’t be affected by strong odor. However, I’d still advise opening the pipette out of your cat’s sight!

The good thing about Advantage is you can buy a single one month dose. This is great if you’re unsure and want to try it without the need to buy a pack of three.

In addition, you have a choice of pack sizes so you can save money. This is great if you have multiple cats as you must treat all of them.

Key Features
  • Fast acting starts working within 12 hours
  • Fragrance free
  • Kills adult fleas and eggs
  • Active ingredients imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen
  • Veterinarian recommended
  • Works for up to 30 days
  • Suitable for kittens over 8 weeks old
  • Waterproof

TevraPet FirstAct Plus Flea & Tick Spot Treatment for Cats

TevraPet FirstAct Plus is a spot on treatment containing the same ingredients as Frontline but at a cheaper cost. However, there’s no skimping on quality as the product is made in a certified EU-GMP facility in Germany.

This topical spot on solution is formulated to kill not only fleas and ticks, but chewing lice as well. These nasty pests feed on debris from your cat’s skin and can cause irritation.

Key Features
  • Same ingredients as Frontline
  • Kills fleas, ticks, eggs, and chewing lice.
  • Suitable for cats over 1.5 pounds
  • Made in a certified EU-GMP facility

Flea Away Flea & Tick Oral Treatment for Dogs & Cats Chewable Tablets

Flea Away Flea & Tick Oral Treatment contains natural ingredients. These are administered in chewable tablets as a tasty treat.

Unlike spot on treatments, Flea Away works by repelling insects. This is done by creating an undesirable environment that’s hard for fleas and ticks to survive.

In addition it’s also formulated to repel mosquitos. Depending on the area you live in this could be a big plus.

Each chew tablet contains a mix of vitamins that repel pests naturally without toxic chemicals. Also, Flea Away is advertised as promoting your pet’s health.

The downside is you have to administer daily. This is less convenient than monthly spot on treatments.

However, the upside is it contains only natural ingredients.
Providing you remember to give your pet her chew each day, you should start noticing a difference within a month.

If your cat has a severe infestation you may be better off using a spot on treatment. This is because it takes time to work.

However, once your cat or dog is clear of fleas and ticks you could always give Flea Away a try. As some cats react badly to
chemicals used in spot on you may even prefer a natural alternative.

You may be wondering how vitamins can repel fleas and ticks so I’ll try and explain. Flea Away claim their vitamins mask the smell of Co2 (carbon dioxide) which is responsible for attracting fleas.

As well as a flea treatment, active ingredients found in Flea Away may help promote skin and joint health. This makes it an all round supplement.

You can also use the product in addition to spot on treatments if desired. This may be a good idea if your pet already has an infestation.

Key Features
  • 100% natural ingredients
  • No toxic chemicals
  • Works by repelling fleas
  • Promotes joint and skin health
  • Liver flavored chews
  • Easy to administer

Pet Naturals Flea + Tick Spray for Dogs & Cats

Pet Naturals flea and tick spray works by repelling pests using natural oils from certified Brazilian forests. These same oils were used for centuries by tribesman to repel mosquitos and other undesirable insects.

As Pet Naturals doesn’t contain toxic chemicals it’s completely safe for all pet ages. However, as with all natural products there’s still a risk your cat or dog could be allergic.

If you decide to try Pet Naturals flea and tick spray I’d recommend only spraying a small area first like a patch test. Then as long as there’s no adverse reaction use as directed.

In addition, you can also spray bedding as well as soft furnishings. Although it’s advertised as non-staining I’d still do a small patch test first.

Active ingredients lemon grass, cinnamon oil, sesame oil and castor oil. Though all ingredients are completely safe, the spray isn’t recommended for human use.

Key Features
  • 100% natural
  • Non-toxic
  • Can be used on bedding
  • Safe for dogs and cats of all ages.
  • Oils harvested from certified Brazilian forests.

Vet’s Best Flea and Tick Waterless Bath Foam for Cats

Vet’s Best waterless foam bath kills fleas and ticks on contact. As it’s 100% natural you can safely use it on your cat without fear of her ingesting toxins.

Active ingredients are peppermint and eugenol. These natural oils are effective in killing ticks and fleas as well as eggs. In addition they’ve also been shown to repel mosquitos.

As bathing is rarely tolerated by most cats, a waterless foam provides a unique solution. However, it’s recommended you do a small patch test first.

As mentioned previously, just because a product is natural doesn’t mean your pet won’t have an adverse reaction. It’s exactly the same as you or I doing a patch test before applying a hair dye.

If spraying foam on your cat makes her run in horror, spray on your hands first. You can then massage the foam gently into your cat’s skin.

Key Features
  • 100% natural
  • Contains peppermint and eugenol.
  • Suitable for kittens over 12 weeks old
  • Repels mosquitos
  • Kills fleas, flea eggs and ticks
  • Easy to use

Average rating 4.1 out of 5

Vet’s Best flea and tick spot on works by killing and repelling fleas and ticks. It does this using a combination of cedarwood and peppermint oils.

Both have shown to be effective in eliminating pests, though you can use it in conjunction with Frontline or similar if your cat is already infested.

However, it’s always a good idea to ask your vet first. This is especially important if your cat is on any medication.

  • 100% natural
  • Kills fleas, flea eggs and ticks

What To Look For In A Flea Treatment

I’ve shared a variety of of flea treatments with you, and as you’ve seen there is a wide choice. While some contain insecticides, others only use natural ingredients.

However, if your cat is already infected you need a fast acting solution. This is because of the speed at which fleas develop.

A female can lay up to 50 eggs a day, and can soon infest not only your cat but bedding as well. While spot on treatments are easy to apply, tablets can be notoriously hard to administer.

Spot on applications containing fipronil and methoprene are fast acting with results seen within days. Although highly effective in killing fleas, they are also toxic with potential side effects.

Natural alternatives are kinder to your cat and many cat parents find they work well in eliminating fleas. Of course, not all brands are the same, and what works well for one may not for another.

If you want continuous protection you could consider a flea collar for your cat. These can work very well at repelling pesky fleas and ticks

How Cats Get Flees

There are many ways your kitty can pick up a few unwanted hitch hikers. Fleas can jump over 200 times their size, so it’s no wonder a few cat chats with next doors feline can leave your cat with unwanted visitors!

In addition, if your kitty is a hunter some of her prey may be infested. While you can’t stop your cat’s natural instinct, you can prevent fleas from taking up residence.

Even if your cat is a couch potato, and prefers the indoor life you’d be surprised how easy it is for indoor cats to get fleas. In fact, you may even bring a few home on your clothing!

How To Keep Your Home Free From Fleas!

best flea and tick treatment for cats-how to keep your home free from fleas

Treating your cat for fleas is only a part of eliminating them. You may kill or repel fleas and ticks on your pet but unless you treat her bedding as well you’ll be fighting a losing battle.

In addition, you should also treat all areas of your home most frequented by your cat. For example, the sofa or windowsill. Also, carpets, curtains and flooring should be treated as well.

Doing this will tackle the problem quicker and reduce the chance of further infestations. Washing your cats bedding frequently will kill any eggs, and wash your bedding as well if your cat shares your bed.

If you’ve treated your cat for an infestation make sure you spray all areas your cat has access to. You can get sprays suitable for fabrics and soft furnishings as well as yard treatments.

Keeping your cat flea free is a combination of topical or oral applications plus finding the best flea treatment for home use.

  1. First of all, I love the picture of the grumpy cat at the end o this post 😀 Secondly, thanks for sharing these recommendations. I would probably consider the first one because you said you use it as well. It doesn’t have to be from all-natural ingredients as long as it is safe for cats and approved by vets. Does the company ship products all over the world? Thanks in advance!

    • Hi Ivan, glad you enjoyed this post, and the grumpy cat photo:) Yes, I’ve only ever used Frontline as it works fast and seems effective. I agree as long as a flea treatment works and is approved by vets there’s no reason not to use it. However, some pet owners prefer natural products as they’re unlikely to have any side effects. Thanks for stopping by. In answer to your question, the company doesn’t ship to all countries, but you can check their list:)

  3. Hi Kathy,

It’s good to have your recommendations about flea and tick treatment for cats, and I think I will pick up the last four because they are 100% natural. It’s not surprising that human beings could bring uninvited fleas home so does our cats.

We could use the oils and spray from your recommendations to clean up the sofa or windowsill? Or should we use something else to clean all the areas?

    • Hi Matt, thank you for your comment:) Yes, I also like the natural flea treatments. Even though I’ve not personally used them, they have good ratings and reviews. In answer to your question about using the oils and spray on your sofa, NO!. You can get flea sprays especially for the home. These should be used after you’ve treated your pet. Always do a small patch test first on fabric and soft furnishings. These are designed to kill any eggs so they won’t be transferred back on your pet. Thanks for stopping by:)

  4. Hi Kathy,
I have three kittens at my home and I think this information is something that helped me a lot. Every treatment seems to be very effective but for me, the second one is really good as it lasts for 30days and fast-acting, also it is veterinarian recommended.

And also fifth one is great to go for as it is 100% natural and non toxic. I used to always think that how a cat gets fleas and today finally I got the answer in detail. Your explanation of all the points is very much in detail and straightforward which any person can easily understand.

    Thanks
    Cheers!
